Below is a project we´ve been working on for the past few months for our company. It consists in an Universal Artificial Intelligence Application.
It alow us, from within one interface, to work with different technologies, like AIML, Pandorabots (on-line and off-line modes), Ultra Hal and Conversive Verbot.
It also alow us to use different types of virtual characters to speak, using any SAPI4 or 5 TTS engine. So far, we can use MSAgents, Haptek characters and Verbot characters (both with MSAgent and CCS conversive proprietary format).
The idea behind this project is having a central interface to command all others AI engines, and using any type of character animation technology. This really expand our possibilities on the serch for a full AI automation application. We can use our already made Pandora AIML sets, Ultra Hal AI base, and Verbot Knowledgebase. This make a really powerfull engine. This application even alow us to make a conversation between a character conected to an AIML set with a character conected with a Ultra Hal AI base, and even with a third one conected with a Verbot knowledgebase. The result is a really interesting conversation among AI bots. We can make one bot learn from another one with different AI engine.
In the folowing topics, I´ll share our progress with the community.
So far, this interface has the features below:

- Voice Recognition
- Digital Recognition
- OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and converting text to speech
- Ultra realistic characters
- Conect to on-line Pandorabot Program D
- Conect to AIML local files, for off-line chat
- Conect to both Ultra Hal and Verbot AI bases
- Use TTS engines (SAPI 4 and 5) to speak responses, using MSAgents, Haptek engine or Verbot skins
- Text to speech tool. Alow us to convert any text from clipboard, webpages, e-books, pdfs to voice format (wma, flash streaming, mp3 etc..)
- Translation tool
- RSS news reader
- Stock market info
- Wheather forecast info
- Scheduler and calendar
- e-mail checker (up to 4 accounts)
- total control over Winamp using AIML commands.
- Tasks schedduler. Control any Windows XP and Vista application.
- remote control Ultra Hal and Verbot interfaces
- all the functions above can be started using AIML natural language commands.
With a Wizard Setup, you can:
1-Start the application automatically with Windows every day
2-Check for new e-mails, read aloud a-mail´s sender and title, and optionaly the body
3-Read our to do list for today, as well as our appointments
4-Read news from RSS feeds
6-Read wheater forecast
6-Check for stock variations
7-Start some music or video
8-do some other windows tasks..
9-Stay resident in memory to keep checking for new e-mails, news and appointments.
etc...
One of the goals with this project, besides the AIML and speech funtions, is time adminstration and information tracking.
Right now we´re implementing motion detection, so the Virtual Assistant knows somebody got in front of computer, so she can give us some greeting with important information.

Just bought Vanessa (sounds like slavery, doesn't it?) Anyway, great work! Thank You.
But, I have this green background on the medium and small heads. The big head is o.k.. Do You have a fix or a workaround for this?

please create a flash character which is an interface to the microsoft speach and voice recognition which of course resides on the user's client not on your servers.
so that in a web page with javascript we can
1) tell the flash object to say something and the flash sends the text to speak to the microsoft speach output and synchronizes the character's mouth with the microsoft speach output.
2) tell the flash object to listen using a grammar and the flash passes the recognized user voice input to the javascript.
is that even possible? |

| Have been following your progress on the Virtual Human Forum. Denise is fantastic there is something about her eyes that pull you right in. I thought your earlier creations were great but every day you out do your last project. I am like most awaiting your interface it sounds like everything I was trying to create rolled into one neat package. I agree with one of your comments concerning clothing and how for office work a secretary would need a different wardrobe. Will we be able to substitue clothing? I have no problem with skimpy clothing but for the wife and gand children I will have to tone it down. Keep up the good work! |

I would like to ask the following:
I am thinking of purchasing Nicole or Vannessa, but I have two computers, one is XP and works online daily, and the other is vista, which i never use online.
Can I use Nicole or vanessa on both computers? Will I be able to use SAPI5 (Purchased from nextup.com) with Chinese (writing pinyin) and English. Or can I just talk in the two languages and they will understand me?
I have read your blog on enquiries on SAPI4 and 5 and an earlier text states it is not possible, but a later reply states you are working on it.
I have tried sending this via the contact page but it isnt accepting my email....

| Hi Denise, yes, we found out that Vista deals with images in a different way than prevoius versions of windows. We are already porting Nicole to be compatible with Vista. This will be done in a couple of days, when all our clients will be able to download the new version. |

Nicole looks great in XP, but last night I put her on my new Vista laptop and the transparency color is solid. Resizing Nicole on Vista also didn't work correctly (again, it's great on XP). My VB6 app lets me resize agents and when I resized Nicole to 1/4 size I got a green screen with a path of hair in the bottom left corner of it. Instead of resizing from center, it resized from top left.
Vista seems to have changed the way it handles agents. |

Hi Nick,
Make sure the .acs file is in your C:\WINDOWS\msagent\chars folder (when you install the files, normally the installer already save in this folder)
You have to make sure you have a TTS (text to speech) engine install in you computer. Read the .txt file attached for help.
With Verbot software, there are two ways to load Kirei/Vanessa. You can load her directly in Verbot Player. Click in the Edit/options/avatar/msagent. Click the clear button. Now you can chose the Kirei or Vanessa*.acs file in the agent list box.
The better way, is to make a skin with the Verbot Editor. This way, you can also customize the background image, color, etc...

Hi Guile, it's Randy (Randal on Verbots), and I'm looking at the Vanessa animations. I have one question that maybe you can help with. When Vanessa is a robot, or nude, or whatever, does she have other animations besides talking or does she revert back to her original, normal, dress and look?

| I have kirei and I need helping making her hide and appear. She has a hide animation and lots more but how can we invoke these emotions? I looked in the folder: Winn/msagent/char but could not get access to or identify her emotions. It seems like I only see her expose her emotions when she feels like it. Hi Regan, We work with many softwares to build our MS Agent characters, but the main ones are Poser 6, 3D Studio Max, Photoshop CS2 and Flash MX. We also work with Microsoft Character Editor (ACS) to assemble the charaters in the msagent format..

What software did you use to render the characters? DAZ|Studio or Poser? Did you use a lip syncing plugin or just set each pose up manually? Are the morphs and clothes of your own design or could you give a link to where you got them?

| Your characters are excellent. Would be great to see them in a customized test to speech teachable bot. Many of the bot developers have problems when MS Agents are used, the Agent doesn't respond to all test inputs. Why does that take place? |

Be sure to buy just SAPI 4 voices, because Msagent doesn´t work with SAPI 5.
To change the text the agent speaks, you need to have verbot standard and edit or create a knowledge base file with the text you want him to speak.

When I try to follow your instructions for adding agents I find the agents tab is grayed out. Cannot add agents. How do I work around this or activate the agents/characters tabs?

| Hello, this is absolutlely awesome,I am very impressed with the realism. I have never liked the characters i have seen..till now. I don't see you having competition. Vanessa is mind blowing, very good work. Me being female don't need the sexy part, i just love the realism to her and the emotions! I am anxious to use the characters to learn. | I downloaded Kirei special and think she is awesome, only problem is she has a mans voice. I went in and adjusted the speech to female in control panel but she stillhas a mans voice. What can i do to fix this. |

| Hi Mike. Don´t worry, Vanessa doesn´t show any nudity by herself. To show any of the nudity animations you have to explicity call this animations in the software or script that you are using with her. |

I really like whay you'll are doing here. I definaltley like the Kirei Agent. The main problem is that I use Ultra Hal, and leave it running while I work, which means She is in front of the screen all the time. It would be nice to see a full body, smaller version for us in Ultra Hal.

The best way to avoid your character to pup-up in front of your applications is request his “hide” animation. The fastest way to do this is right click on the character and click the “hide” option. Also, you can do this from inside your verbot or office application.

Hi Mike,
You have to save the agents files (.acs) that you´ve downloaded from our website in C:\windows\msagent\chars folder of your computer if you run windows XP. For windows NT or 2000, I believe this folder is C:\winnt\msagent\chars
After that, open Verbot player, go to Edit/Options, choose Agents tab. You´ll find in the list box all the Agents you have in your computer, so now you can change it to your favorite agent. Try to hit the "clear" button in this windows to do a "refresh".
